Computer Operation Procedures
Before a new PC is connected to the internet :
- Create a "Limited User" account to ensure the profile does not
have administrative privileges.
- This will minimize the chances that a user will inadvertently download and install
viruses or potentially harmful applications.
- The only time that the administrative account should be used is to connect
to the internet to download and install application and security patches and anti-virus updates from
trusted websites like Microsoft, Symantec, Trend Micro, McAfee, etc.
- The administrative account may also be used to install legitimate applications that
have originated from a trusted source.
- Create passwords for all user accounts on the computer.
- This will reduce the risk of access to your computer by unauthorized users via
the shared connectivity.
- Install an anti-virus application from a reputable company.
- Install Microsoft Windows Defender, a free tool for protecting against spyware (for Windows
XP - Windows Vista comes with Defender pre-installed)
